How to Care for your Scissors after Disinfecting them We have received many questions from stylists asking us what is the best way to care for their scissors after disinfecting them. Here are some guidelines to help care for your scissors after disinfecting them: **Please note that you must contact the Cosmetology licensing board in your state or city in order to get their current tool disinfecting requirements. Laws in each state can be different and the laws are constantly changing.** Step 1: Disinfect your scissors according to your state's requirement, for example: a. Wash the scissor with soap and water to remove all visible debris. b. Spray the scissor with a an EPA-registered disinfectant, with demonstrated bactericidal, fungicidal, and virucidal activity (an example is Barbicide or Mar-V-Cide). We do not recommend using any other disinfectant unless it is designed for metal. Do NOT use Barbicide TB or Mar-V-Cide 2, unless your state requires a Tuberculocidal disinfectant. Do not soak the scissor unless your state requires it. If your state does require you to soak the scissor for 10 minutes, do NOT soak the scissor longer than 10 minutes. c. Immediately after spraying or soaking with disinfectant, thoroughly rinse the disinfectant off the scissor with water and dry with a soft towel. d. Oil your scissor as described in the scissor care and maintenance manual. Click here for instructions on oiling and cleaning your scissor. Though all high quality scissors are made of stainless steel, stainless steel will rust if not properly cared for. It's very important to keep your scissors away from water and harsh chemicals. If your scissors must encounter water and harsh chemicals when disinfecting them, be sure to follow the above instructions. Cleaning and Oiling your scissor daily and after any contact with water or harsh chemicals is extremely important to prevent rust and corrosion. Excessive rust and corrosion can not be repaired and will permanently damage a scissor. **Again, please note that you must contact the Cosmetology licensing board in your state or city in order to get their current tool disinfecting requirements. Laws in each state can be different and the laws are constantly changing.** |
